Startups are only as good as the quality of work their staff does. If you’re building a startup, you’ll want to put together a team that’s skilled and passionate enough to deliver growth. A big part of achieving success on this front is filling roles effectively from the start. So you must know how to onboard new employees.

A properly executed onboarding process will prepare fresh recruits for their jobs, expose them to company culture, and help them develop a connection with existing team members. These are foundations that must be laid for employees to thrive. In this article, we’ll talk about the steps you can take to onboard your new workers.

Give Out Resources

Your recruits will need resources that guide them through the company’s mission, vision, values, history, culture, and hierarchy. They may also need explainers that cover things like what roles entail, associated benefits, and other compensations. Distributing resources like this is one of the first things you should do, as it’s an initial step on the path to familiarizing new employees with the organization.

Collect Paperwork

You will also have to collect paperwork which you previously handed to your new hires when they’re done with filling those documents. These include employee contracts, payroll forms, and tax forms. Besides providing information that could be useful for taxation and payroll purposes, these documents could come in handy for referential purposes in the future.

Introduce Employees to their Workspace

If your new employees are going to work on-site (instead of remotely), it’s expected that you will introduce them to their workspaces. This in turn assumes that you have already set up that space and made it conducive for them. We recommend that you make introducing them to their workspace a part of a tour of the wider company. Even if you don’t, it’s certainly a good idea to let your latest hires see the various parts of the organization. They are more likely to feel at home with the business if they know their way around it.

Set Up Tech Tools

Ensure that your employees have the tools they need to do their jobs. For example, they may require a computer, an official email address, and software installation and logins. Just get these things ready on time, so your staff can acquaint themselves soon enough.

Provide New Hires with Mentors

For a quicker adjustment to life in your startup, your recruits should be paired with more experienced persons who work there. These older employees can be mentors to new team members, sharing useful tips and insights that could help the latter be better at what they do.

Train New Employees

Training is a crucial component of any proper onboarding process. It’s seldom enough to just show new team members around your premises. You also have to expose them to the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in their roles. A decent training regime will help recruits acquire and sharpen a mix of technical and soft skills, and improve their ability to apply those skills in their specific roles.

Evaluate Progress

As you train your recruits, make sure to track their progress and get feedback from them. Ushering them into their roles will take time; one study suggests that new staff do not achieve optimal productivity in their roles until a year after they are hired.
