According to an article by Maple, “66% of C-suite executives and board members believe culture is more important to performance than the organization’s strategy or operating model”. This means that beyond production, marketing and sales, emphasis should be placed on creating positive work culture.
This has become a widely discussed topic, especially with the increase in remote work conditions. Team members are no longer seen working in the same office space for long hours. A bulk of this boils down to communication and certain dynamics that concern hybrid work conditions.
In this article, I highlight three tips you can implement to normalize positive work culture, regardless of the working conditions.
Improve communication channels
One of the greatest impediments to positive work culture in any organization is lack of or inadequate communication. For instance, if remote work is applicable, there should be a high level of communication between you and your team and amongst team members. Thanks to virtual modes of communication. These days, from the call to apply to the onboarding and work process, communication is done virtually. Take good advantage of this and open up good communication channels for yourself and your team.
This will build transparency and accountability within the organization.
Foster a result-only work environment (ROWE)
This is simple. Create an environment that is, amongst all other things, work-oriented. Moreover, that is what you are in business for; to work and achieve productivity. If you aren’t satisfied with the level of output from your team, the problem might just come from you. You might need to train and retrain your team. Make them fully aware of their roles and responsibilities in your firm. Set realizable goals and give deadlines.
Also, run checks and evaluations from time to time to ascertain their level of compliance with their roles. Especially in this remote job world, it can be pretty difficult to get people to do the right things. Even when it is a physical office space, don’t give room for gossip, cliques and other office distractions. Let your team know that irrespective of the fact that people should be friendly, they should not be carried away with frivolities.
That is why you should not joke with your hiring process. This is because it forms the basis for every employee’s work culture in your organization. It is advisable that you take your time to recruit the best hands. And when you do, spend more time in training and retraining them. You’d be sure to get them in their purest and best forms.
Create a psychologically friendly environment
One great thing you can do for your business is to invest in the mental health of your employees. Statistics show that employees are productive according to their mental states. If your team is not performing maximally, it could be that some of them have mental health issues to deal with. It could be as simple as mental stress. Take breaks, short vacations and retreats. Unwind with your team in another environment that can spur creativity and productivity.
Overall, create a safe and secure environment for your employees. Let them know that their opinions, feedback and services are appreciated, and not condemned or ridiculed. Ensure that the environment is work-oriented, so they know what they are up against. Also, don’t forget to communicate properly with them. In it lies the productivity you crave so much.
