One of the many ways a dapper man impresses his audience or anyone who cares to notice is his precision and expertise when it comes to what he chooses to be seen in. This is why particular attention should be given to how a tie matches with a shirt. It might look like it is no issue at all but it goes a long way in revealing the kind and the quality of man that you are.
The first thing you need to know is that matching a tie to a shirt requires attention to colours and patterns. As soon as you understand the guidelines below, you will find it easy to match your ties with the right shirt and suit combination.
1. To pick a tie that matches with your shirt, start first with the largest piece of clothing and work your way to the smallest. In this instance, the largest is your suit then your shirt then your tie. One of the most common suit colours is the dark gray suit so we’ll use it as an example.
Take your dark gray suit and lay it out on your bed so you can see laid out before you how all the colours would match. Next is your shirt. Think of what you have and the colours that would best match your dark gray suit. Four shirt colour options come to mind: light blue, white, pink, blue stripes or checkered pattern on white. Chances are you would have at least two of the above options. Let’s assume you choose the light blue shirt, pick it up and place it on the dark gray suit you have on the bed.
Now, to find a matching tie … What colour of tie will work best with a dark gray suit and a light blue shirt? We find that the following neck tie colours are best suited: dark blue, burgundy red, pink, yellow, grayish green, all kinds of stripped ties and small patterns. You can go ahead and choose the colour of tie you like to wear on your suit and shirt combination.
2. There are two rules you must note when combining ties, shirts and suits:
a. Patterns can be paired with plain pieces
b. Small patterns can be paired with large patterns pieces
For example, if you choose to wear a blue pinstripe suit which is a patterned piece, look for plain pieces like a light blue shirt and a light red tie. Your blue pinstripe suit is a small patterned piece so you can also combine it with large patterns like a white shirt with blue checkered lines and a pink or yellow tie to go.
3. Do not fall under the need to make harmony every time that you don’t see the harmony a good contrast can bring. For example, with a dark blue suit and a light blue shirt, you might naturally want to go for the safe and boring option of a dark blue tie but a bright or cool orange will be a better bet. Also with a dark blue suit and a white shirt, an option of a red tie would pull your look all over the place like a carnival but with a soft pink tie, a light blue tie or a light green tie, there is contrast, there is harmony and all is still well with the world.
