I am forced to ask why you would want to change your name but I know better than that. There are so many reasons- legal ones. Mostly, people change their name for marital reasons or even just sentimental. So here is how to do it legally in simple steps.

To do this:

  1. Proceed to a court and swear an affidavit stating your intention to change your name. According Lawpadi, an affidavit is a technical term for a sworn statement in writing made especially under oath or on affirmation before an authorized magistrate or officer of the court. Usually an affidavit is binding till a more substantial document is obtained.   
  2. Proceed to make a publication in a nationally published newspaper to announce the name change.
  3. Normally that would be about but you will have to as a matter of expediency inform relevant individuals and authorities of your name change. These relevant authorities may be your employer, your school (not binding), and relevant government agencies.

You must know that if your reasons for seeking a name change are sinister as in trying to change your identity for criminal reasons or anything illegal, be advised that the government will require proof of a change of name before issuing you an identity card or international passport for instance so you will be required to present legal documents to that effect. The relevant legal documents will be your marriage certificate or the affidavit of change of name.
