Some of us argue that we are not team players, in fact, certain people deliberately make things difficult for other members of the team so as to drive their point home. They prefer staying alone and doing things on their own with little or no help from other members of their group. Their argument is usually that they only trust themselves to carry out intended activities perfectly. However, the truth is that at one point or the other we all need someone to help us out with certain issues whether we like it or not. Besides, working in a team brings about cooperation and more productivity, so if you are not a team player here are a few tips that can help you become one:
- Realise that unity is strength. Remember the old story involving a single broomstick and a bunch of broomsticks tied together to make an unbreakable bond? This should always be at the back of your mind whenever you are asked to perform activities with a group of people. A team of people working together are more difficult to dissuade than just a single person doing the same work. You need to realise that working with a team means turning your weakness into strength.
- Focus on the end product. Do not waste precious time scrutinising and criticising every single member of your team. Think of where you are going rather than pausing to look at the behaviour and attitude of each and every person on the team. Being focused will give you the opportunity to put all of your energy into working instead of judging your team members.
- Look on the bright side. Every misfortune can be turned into something good with the right approach and attitude. Stop dwelling on the negative aspects of being a team and start looking at the numerous opportunities and experience you stand to gain by working side by side with other talented people. It is not all bad, look at the positive aspects that are beneficial to you and neglect most of the negative aspects.
- Work on your social skills: If you are not able to relate normally to people in your daily activities, then maybe it is time for you to start learning how to interact and communicate with people effectively. This is because you will need to be able to talk and interact well with members of your team when working together to reach a common goal.
