The recent victory Nigeria had against Iceland succeeded in quelling the pessimism in Nigerians towards the outcomes of the World Cup.

diversity

The world is becoming a smaller one as cultural diversity is cultivating its roots in every nook and cranny of all continents of the world more than ever before. Races are beginning to appreciate the cultural differences between themselves and the stench of racial discrimination is rapidly dissipating. And Nigeria isn’t left out of the picture. In fact, in recent times, we have witnessed various foreign personalities express their love and appreciation for our country and its intrinsic aspects. Earlier this year, Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, and P.Diddy reached out to a group of Nigerian dancing kids known as the Dream Catchers. To show how phenomenal she thought the kids were, Naomi Campbell even went as far as paying them a visit when she came to Nigeria for the Arise Fashion Week. P.Diddy, also known as Sean Combs, who showed support for the Dream Catchers, recently posted a video of himself and his kids dancing to the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti‘s afrobeat classics. Seam Combs has expressed more solidarity with this country. Also, a few months back, a video of a group of US soldiers singing the Nigerian anthem surfaced on the internet. In the video, the soldiers sing the National Anthem verbatim and with enthusiasm like it was their own country’s anthem. This made me cast my mind back to some of the beautiful renditions of The Star Spangled Banner by some of America’s biggest celebrities. One may put forth the argument that they had something to be patriotic about but let’s not forget in a hurry that America once started from somewhere. The so-called founding fathers had to forge the civilization we know today as America through effort and solidarity. This goes to show that the thought of patriotism shouldn’t just be welcomed when it’s all rosy but even through thick and thin. For the love of Nigeria, we also must take up the reins of solidarity.
