Do you ever find yourself thinking “I need more healthy options in my refrigerator” or do you ever open your fridge and there is never a quick healthy option for you? Then this article is for you. I get asked quite often how I maintain my body weight and my answer has always been the same, I strive for a healthy diet most times. After all, weight loss is more about your diet and less about your exercise regime- “80/20 rule.”

I have found out over the years that what I stock my refrigerator with has either helped or sabotaged my health goals. It is never an overnight success but all about taking steps similar to a baby learning how to walk. It not about throwing out the ice-cream tube in your freezer and the sweets in your fridge (because there will be nights maybe days, when you will wish you hadn’t thrown them all away, lol). It is about making small meaningful changes. I am sharing a few of my favourite food items that you will always find in my refrigerator and why I love them. There are a few items that I am sure you are already familiar with.

Eggs
High in protein and omega-3s. What’s not to love about eggs; boiled, pouched, scrambled, fried … name it, there is always a way to make it your own and enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Kale
My favourite vegetable these days is kale. Of all the super leafy greens, kale is king! It is packed with nutrients from Vitamins C, K, A and also high in fibre. I add it to my smoothies, omelettes and it’s amazing when mixed with spinach for making vegetable stews .

Greek Yoghurt
Greek yoghurt is another source of protein that can be enjoyed in many different ways. I stick to plain Greek yoghurt which is packed with sugars. It is perfect as a snack and a great add on to smoothies. It is also a perfect substitute in making different meals such as Fettuccine Alfredo.

Soy milk
It is one of my favourite sources of liquid protein. I usually add it to oatmeal or cereal.

Fruits
I always stock up on fruits that are in season. They are usually cheapest in season and are readily available anywhere. They are packed with tons of vitamins too. I add them to my smoothies as natural sweeteners and they make the best desserts.

Mushrooms
Mushrooms although not pretty to the eyes are amazingly loaded with proteins. I love the fact that they are a low calorie food item and so filling! I use them as a meat substitute for my omelettes and enjoy them sautéed mixed with other vegetables.

Frozen mixed vegetables
My favourite go to item in the freezer part of refrigerator are frozen veggies. Toss them over rice, noodles or even enjoy as a side dish … they are very versatile. They are high in fibre and antioxidants and only require a few minutes of cooking time before they are ready for consumption.

If you noticed, I highlighted more food items high in proteins. I did this because diets rich in protein can be enjoyed in moderation at any time of the day with little to no negative consequences to your body and your health goals!
