  As part of Nigeria’s effort to increase internet connectivity in rural Nigeria and to expand internet capacity in urban areas, SpaceX’ Starlink is in an advanced stage of getting a license to provide their internet service to Nigerians.

SpaceX’s Starlink Market Access Director for Africa, Ryan Goodnight, during SpaceX’s presentation to the Commission in Abuja, disclosed that SpaceX is seeking necessary licenses to bring Starlink, its internet service into Nigeria Goodnight stated that Nigeria has been identified as a critical market in Africa. Before the face-to-face meeting happened last week, SpaceX – an American private space exploration company founded by Elon Musk – had been discussing with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) through its Executive Vice-Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta. With the Nigerian government’s plan to bring in 90% of its population online by 2025, this collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria is to complement the Microsoft Airband Initiative (which uses TV whitespace technology for the internet) to improve internet connectivity.

Elon Musk initially founded SpaceX in 2002 to revolutionize space technology and reduce space transportation costs until Starlink was created to provide internet services. As of March 2021, Starlink had sent more than 1,100 satellites into space. Starlink will deliver super-fast internet via satellite technology to rural areas. Starlink is a low latency broadband internet system created to meet the internet needs of consumers living in rural areas with low internet penetration, especially. Starlink is capable of delivering up to 150Mbps internet speeds to any place on the planet as long as a customer have a clear view of the sky. Not everyone can sign up on Starlink at the moment as it is currently in beta version. Starlink’s beta costs $99 (~₦40,000) per month for low bandwidth users. There is also a $499 (~₦200,000) product for large scale users paid upfront to cover the Starlink kit. The Starlink kit includes necessary hardware such as a small satellite dish, power supply, a router, and a mounting tripod for the dish.
