Next to Abakiliki, Afikpo is the second largest urban area in Ebonyi State, located in the eastern part of Nigeria. The town prides itself with a rich cultural heritage and historical reports have it that her civilization can be dated to as far back as the Neolithic age. Interestingly, the town’s landscape is a hilly one, located between open grasslands and tropical rain forests. Tourists would find Afikpo an endearing place because in her is the home of Africa’s top traditional dance groups, cultural festivals and works of art. Afikpo is also known as Ehugbo and urban communities within the town include Itim, Nkpoghoro, Ohaisu, Ozizza and Ugwuegu. Top Sites include: Amanchor Cave: This 4km long and 3km high cave is located Etiti, in the southern part of Afikpo. The cave has multiple narrow tunnels that extend into several directions. One can access it from Mile 2 along Akaeze-Ngusu roads which are about 140km from Enugu and 76km from Abakiliki. Golden Sand Beaches of Afikpo: Ndibe, Ozizza and Unwana beaches make up the Golden Sand Beaches and are ideal relaxation centres located in Afikpo. Pastime includes swimming, sports-fishing, and canoe-racing. Ndibe and Unwana beaches are located along the Cross River basin. Mater Misericordiae Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery: The Mater Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery was one of the first and probably remains the finest nursing school established in 1946 by Irish Catholic missionaries and Dr. Akanu Ibiam. Souvenir ideas involve the art and craft that the town is best known for and though prices are unpredictable, you’ll make a good buy if you bargain well. Did you know? Unwana in Afipko is the home of the late Dr. Akanu Ibiam, who was the first Igbo medical doctor of Western training and the former Governor of Eastern region.
