Did you know that the father of Mavin Records’ Dr Sid was a popular Nollywood star? I bet you didn’t also know that the famous singer was a practising dentist.

Sidney Onoriode Esiri known commonly as Dr Sid is a Nigerian singer-songwriter. He graduated with a degree in dental surgery from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State. After his graduation, he worked in a number of dental clinics and health facilities including the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. All the while, he seized every opportunity to showcase his talent in entertainment, combining music and dentistry.

He started out as a choreographer for the hip-hop group Trybesmen (aka Da Trybe) in 1999. Later on, he went to the UK where he worked with JC & the 419 Squad, Felix Duke, KAS, R70 and D’Banj. He began recording his album, Prognosis after he returned Nigeria in 2005.

Upon abandoning his career in dentistry to fully embrace music, he became one of the first signees on the Mo’Hits record label run by D’banj and Don Jazzy in 2007.

Dr Sid has two studio albums and numerous singles including “Over the Moon”. He has also featured conspicuously in a number of collaborations.

Since pursuing his passion for music over dentistry, he has received several recognitions including Hip-Hop World Revelation of the year 2011; Hip-Hop World Awards: Best Pop Single, 2011; and the 2014 City People Entertainment Awards Best Collaboration.

Sid’s father was Nollywood veteran Justus Esiri, well-known for his roles in the NTA TV-series- The Village Headmaster, the film adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and the movies “Wasted Years” and “Assasins Practice” for which he won a post-humous Africa Movie Academy Award.
