Water is a life giving gift of nature. It is associated with birth, fertility, purification and refreshment. Sixty percent of the human body is made up of water. While there is no universally agreed quantity of water to be consumed daily, one should at least consume a minimum of eight glasses of water every day. This is because all the organs of the body need water. The body has an efficient water management system that moves water to parts of the body where it is needed. It also regulates the water level in the body. When the water level is low, the body’s thirst mechanism alerts us of the need to increase fluid intake.

There is no better time to stay hydrated than now. In case you need more reasons to increase your water intake, here are eight health benefits of drinking water.

Water Improves Blood Circulation

Blood is more than ninety percent water; it carries oxygen to the entire body. Thus, staying hydrated will improve your circulation. It will also have a positive impact on your overall health.

It Aids Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

The digestive system needs water to work properly. Drinking water before, during and after food makes it easier for the body to break down food. It also helps to dissolve the nutrients in the food. Once dissolved, these nutrients are carried to different parts of the body where they are needed.

It Helps Fight off Illnesses

Water consumption promotes good health. When you drink enough water, it can prevent medical conditions like kidney stone, constipation, or urinary tract infection. What’s more, the fact that drinking lots of water helps in nutrient absorption means that your chances of staying healthy will improve. So, if you believe the saying, prevention is better than cure, then drink lots of water.

Water Protects the Brain, Spinal Cord, Sensitive Tissues and Joints

Water is involved in the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. When dehydration occurs, it can affect brain structure and function. So drink lots of water. It will cushion the brain, spinal cord, joints and tissues. This will help you enjoy physical activity. Also, it will help to lessen discomfort caused by such medical conditions as arthritis.

It Helps in Body Waste Excretion

Water leaves the body in form of perspiration, urine and faeces. Sweat regulates the body temperature. When the body heats up, water that is stored in the middle layer of the skin rises to the skin’s surface as sweat. When it evaporates, it cools the body. Conversely, dehydration causes low sweat production, which may result in heat stress. Again, enough water is needed to have a healthy stool. The kidney also requires water.

It Nourishes and Brightens the Skin

Dehydration causes premature wrinkling. It also makes the skin vulnerable to skin disorders. Adequate water intake, on the other hand, nourishes and beautifies the skin. It may also promote collagen production.

Water Aids Saliva and Mucus Formation

Water helps in saliva production; saliva helps in food digestion. It also keeps the eyes, nose and mouth moist. Drinking water keeps the mouth clean and healthy. It also reduces the chances of tooth decay if it is consumed more than sweetened beverages.

Water Consumption Aids Weight Loss

Drinking water has been associated with weight loss. The possibility of this increases if water is taken in place of sweetened beverages. What’s more, preloading with water before meals gives the consumer a sense of fullness. This invariably reduces the quantity of food consumed.
