Habits are series of learned action that becomes reflexive over time. These actions can be learned from parents, siblings, friends,  partners, instructors, role models and from the environment. We all have habits that we employ in different areas of our lives. They can be good, bad or neutral.

Our topic of discussion today is bad kitchen habits.  I’m sure most of us have habits that we employ in the kitchen. This is normal. However, because of the automatic nature of habits, most of us have never taken a moment to consider their merits or demerits. Thus, you may consider today’s article as a call to pay attention. This is because even though cooking is a creative and therapeutic art, I want you and your family to stay safe and healthy while making and enjoying the magic delicacies from your kitchen. For this reason, you need to drop the following bad habits:

Licking the Cooking Spoon and Dipping it Back into the Pot:

People who do this are not supposed to make heaven, eziokwum niine LOL. There is no rationale behind this habit. So, don’t even play that ‘we are family’ card. Being a family or cooking for the family does not give you the right to feed them your saliva. Thus, if you have this habit, stop it and find another way of tasting food. This one is unhygienic, inugo?

Using Blunt Knives:

Omo, a blunt knife is more dangerous than a sharp one. For one thing, you will need to apply more pressure when using it. This is risky as the knife may slip off the food and cut it into your finger. I hope you can now see that you are not doing yourself any good by using blunt knives. Thus, invest in a knife sharpener or employ the services of mobile knife sharpeners.

Piling Plates and Pots in the Sink and Leaving them Overnight:

If you get a glimpse of some people’s kitchen, you’ll not accept even a glass of water from their house. That’s because you’ll see dirty plates, pots and pans piled up, like the Tower of Babel, in the sink.

This is unhygienic. The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in a home. As such, what comes out of it can affect the health and well-being of the family either for better or for worse. Moreover, a fairly accurate assessment of the occupants of the home can be made by looking at the condition of the kitchen. So, if you don’t want people to think your home is one of the dirtiest on the planet, then, demolish that pile of dirty cookware in your kitchen.

Opening the Lid of a Hot Pot with your Bare Hand:

I know some people have developed a tolerance for hot objects. What I don’t understand, however, is why you think that your cooking experience can be assessed by your tolerance for hot items. Anyways, let me say this: there is nothing macho about opening the lid of a hot pot with your bare hands. Kitchen burn is no price. It’s painful. So stop doing that before you hurt yourself.

Answering Phone Calls in the Kitchen:

This one has sent many people to an early grave. Please don’t add to their number. Keep your phones out of the kitchen. If you must make calls make them outside the kitchen.

Keeping your Pot Handle Pointing Over the Edge of the Stove:

Please there is a proper way to place your pots on the Stove. The handles should be turned inwards. Take note of this because if your pot handle is pointing over the edge of the stove and you accidentally bump on it,  you will send the hot pot of food flying.

Shouting Loudly Over an Open Pot of Food:

This one is as bad as licking the cooking spoon and dipping it back into the pot.  If you want to shout or even have a discussion, move away from the food. There is no need to garnish it with your saliva. I hope you can work on getting rid of these bad habits. Featured Image Source: Dreamstime
