Monday is the first day of the workweek. Since productivity is usually at its peak on this day, one would expect that everything about the day would be serious. But this doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, research indicates that fun breeds productivity and positivity at work. In view of this fact, we are beginning the week with fun facts; our food of choice is yogurt. We know that this food is produced by the bacterial fermentation of milk.  We know that it’s creamy, healthy and tasty. But there are a few interesting details about this food that is not common knowledge. Below are seven of them:

It’s a Cleaning Agent: I’m pretty sure you weren’t expecting to see this. But yogurt is actually a natural cleaning product. You can use it to unclog a drain. You can use it to brighten jewelry stones and to shine up copper cookware. If you doubt it, try and see for yourself. It has a Turkish Origin: Thanks to Greek Yoghurt, the automatic assumption is that both the food and the word, yogurt have a Greek origin. This is not so. The word, yogurt comes from the Turkish word, “yog” which means “condense” or ” intensify.” This is an apt description of the process of yogurt making. It Once Delivered a King from the Clutches of an Embarrassing Ailment: In 1542, François I, King of France suffered from recurring gastrointestinal distress. He had the best French doctors at his disposal but none of them could help him. The King was on the verge of losing hope when help came from one of his allies. The ally was Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.  The Sultan, on hearing of the King’s ailment, sent one of his own doctors to him with a cure; the cure was yogurt. It’s Hard to Spell it Wrong: Did you know that the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary recognizes at least a dozen spellings for the word, yogurt? Some of the acceptable spellings for the word include yogurt, yogurd, yahourt, yahourth. So, go ahead and spell your favourite food the way you like; your dictionary won’t mind but your computer’s spell check might.

It was Discovered by Accident: According to one legend, the accidental discovery was made by a Shepherd. He forgot some milk in a skin container for a while. When he finally remembered it,  it had transformed into what we call yogurt today. The Founder of Chobani Greek Yoghurt had no Experience in its Production When He Bought a Defunct Yoghurt Factory: When Hamdi Ulukaya took the highly leveraged deal in 2005, he had no experience in Greek Yoghurt production. Armed with an astute business sense and an idea of the kind of yogurt he wanted, he went about the process of turning his new baby into a formidable brand. Five years later, the company became the best-selling Greek Yoghurt brand in the United States with more than a billion dollars in annual sales. It is Over Four Thousand Years Old: Surprised?
