Lagosians will not forget in a hurry how they danced their hearts away at Muri Okunola park – Victoria Island – on Friday night, as Naija’s liveliest party, Afropolitan Vibes marked its 50th edition. Performances by legendary high-life singer, Bright Chimezie, Omawunmi and Johnny Drille, had the crowd totally mesmerized — bobbing their heads and swaying their hips to the rhythm of the moment. Truly, Friday night was electrifying and a huge success for the mastermind behind the music festival, Ade Bantu, who started the quarterly event with his band [Bantu] in 2016, to give music lovers a space to listen and vibe with alternate sounds firmly rooted in African musical origins.

Performances

Bantu took the stage first, welcoming guests with hit songs from their catalogue which were quite easy to sing-along to for regulars at the festival. Then came the man with the golden voice, Johnny Drille, who I actually think sounds way better in person, singing his hit single, My Beautiful Love, after which he sang Romeo and Juliet while sharing the stage with Ade Bantu. Bantu crew made sure there were no dull moments through the night with perfect interludes from a medley of their hit songs and traditional music. Omawunmi came on next, and the queen of the stage did not disappoint one bit. Her signature energetic moves and vocal dexterity had the audience going all sorts of crazy as they danced to her hit songs like Megbele and Bottom Belle, which was a special request from the crowd. All this, however, did not compare to the rave from the crowd as soon as the legend himself, Bright Chimezie, took the stage. Time rolled back as the high life maestro performed some of his evergreen hits with the crowd singing along, proving yet again that African music will forever be golden.
