Big Cabal Media (BCM) is a media company based in Nigeria. The company houses two well-known publications, TechCabal and Zikoko. Big Cabal has announced that it raised $2.3 million in seed funding to expand its audience and build new verticals. The seed round came after it closed a $620,000 angel and pre-seed round between 2016 and 2020, bringing its total funding to over $2.9 million.

The round was led by MaC Venture Capital with participation from VC firms such as Luminate, Unicorn Group, Future Africa, and several angel investors. The BCM was co-founded by Seyi Taylor and Bankole Oluwafemi in 2013 but Tomiwa Aladekomo, the company’s current CEO, took over from Seyi Taylor in 2018. In 2014, TechCabal saw a vacuum that needed to be filled as the Nigerian tech scene was coming of age. Many local and global venture capitals were elated with startups building the next big thing. Because there was no publication actively documenting events surrounding the rise of the Nigerian tech space. The media house set up camp to become the primary source telling stories and sharing information about players within the tech ecosystem and since then has continued to excel tremendously. Four years after, it’s now one of the most-read tech publications covering Africa’s technology ecosystem, from startups and innovators to venture capitalists and policy-shaping events. It also has newsletters such as The Next Wave and TC Events, an events wing that organizes well-sought-after gatherings of operators and investors.

According to Tech crunch, TechCabal’s website reaches 300,000 to 500,000 unique readers monthly and its newsletters are read by more than 60,000 subscribers across more than 30 countries. As noted earlier, the Big cabal media houses two publications. TechCabal targets stakeholders, news, and volunteer opportunities in the tech space while Zikoko is the second publication that focuses on entirely different topics. Zikoko was launched in 2016, to create and curate content around African youth culture for Gen Zs and millennials within and outside Africa. Originally, the publication revolved around trivial and mundane topics, because it was modelled after  BuzzFeed’s type of content churning out witty listicles and quizzes to its first set of audiences. Some parts of Zikoko’s website still revolve around this content but the publication has grown to become a chronicler of a lot more serious stuff by telling stories about the everyday life of young people in Nigeria via content, video, images, and memes. At its peak, Zikoko reaches over 20 million readers in a single month across different platforms while the publication’s newsletter has an audience of over 100,000 readers monthly. With Zikoko, BCM drives conversations about money, relationships, and careers in ways that nobody else is doing. Featured Image Source: Businessday NG
