With the maxim the best workplaces produce better results, Great Place to Work Institute Nigeria last week organised the 2012 and maiden edition of the Best Companies to Work for Awards. The survey, which identified the best companies to work for in Nigeria, focused on employee/employer relationship, culture, and people management practices.

Speaking during the awards ceremony in Lagos, the Managing Director of Great Place To Work in Nigeria, Kunle Malomo, said that over 225 companies were nominated for the awards, adding that a lot of input was derived from employees of the affected organisations. He said that Trust Index and Culture Audit were the two parameters used in selecting the best companies.

A total of 20 companies were selected as the best places to work in Nigeria with Guiness Nigeria Plc, First Bank, and Guaranty Trust Bank coming out tops. Mr. Malomo said the 20 firms that emerged winners have entered a global database where their performance can be benchmarked against other companies in 46 countries globally, adding that the selected companies have created a trust-based relationship with their employees to achieve success.

He also said that from studying Nigeria’s best places to work, what really differentiates one organisation from another is trust. In other words, the level of trust created in an organisation will influence employee satisfaction and productivity, and foster organisational growth. “Trust is the key differentiator. Trust is defined as a combination of Credibility, Fairness and Respect. This applies to all organizations regardless of regional culture, industry, size or age. By raising the level of trust in the workplace, companies everywhere can improve their business results since cooperation and innovation depend on trust.”

The participating companies in Nigeria are now part of a global community of over 5,500 companies that take part in the Best Companies to Work Surveys. Employees of the participating companies in Nigeria are now part of a global employee pool of 2.5 million people who take part in the Trust Index Survey, the largest employee survey in the world.

Great Place To Work is an internationally recognised organization headquartered in San Fransisco, in the US. It is the world’s largest annual workplace survey, specializing in analysing, understanding, selecting and publishing Best Workplace lists, with participation from about 4,500 companies in 46 countries worldwide. These surveys culminate in the list: 100 Best Companies to Work.

Great Place To Work Nigeria is the 46th affiliate of the network.
