Nigerian ace comedian, Bright Okopocha, better known as Basketmouth, has been awarded the Pan-African Comic of the Year award for the second time in a row.
The comedian was presented with the award at the recently concluded 8th edition of the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards in Johannesburg, South Africa. Other nominees for the award alongside Basketmouth were Zimbabwean Carl Joshua Ncube, the hilarious Kansiime Anne from Uganda, Salvador also from Uganda and Charles Manase from Botswana.
The Nigerian comedian is receiving the award for the second time, having first won it at the 2017 edition.
According to their website, the Savanna Comic’s’ Choice Awards offer professional comedians the opportunity to vote for their favourite comedian in each category. The event usually features a hilarious variety show including stand-up comedy, impressionists, celebrity performances, sketches, and more.
This year’s edition held on the 8th of September at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, in Johannesburg with the theme “The Rhythm of Funny”.
About Bright Okpocha
Bright Okpocha is an actor and stand-up comedian. He, however, tried his hands at music for a while, as a drummer, and later a rapper in the seven-member group “Da Psychopats”, and later in another a rap group, “Da Oddz”. The groups performed at a number of shows, but never really broke even. He may have found his calling sometime around 2000 when he ventured into comedy, winning the National Comedy Award and the awards for Best Stand-up Comedian of the Year in 2005 and 2006. In 2017, Basketmouth sold out an event at the popular Wembley Arena in London.
Basketmouth is at the moment gearing up for The Lords of the Ribs Comedy Festival, scheduled for Sept 29th and 30th. The event will feature comedians from The United States, Kenya, Uganda, the UK, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, and will hold at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
