One good example of the impact technology has had on education over the years is the emergence of online educational platforms. Some of these platforms have proved to be immensely helpful by providing students with high-quality educational materials and allowing them to access their stellar services for free or at affordable rates.
uLesson, a Nigerian Edtech platform that embodies quality and affordable education was recently launched after 12 months of successful beta testing. The platform was founded by Sim Shagaya, founder and former CEO of West Africa’s largest e-commerce platform Konga.com, and founder of E-Motion Advertising. After months of anticipation, the service launched on March 2, 2020, and it has already secured a ₦1.1005 billion($3.1 million) seed funding from TLcom Capital to market its content in West Africa.
Meet The App
uLesson is available on the Google Play store at a downloadable size of 36 MB. In order to launch the app, students have to register using their phone number. Then they will be sent a code via SMS for authentication. Once they have confirmed their identities, they can easily sign up on the app by inputting details such as their names, emails, and phone numbers of parents/guardians.
After signing up, a landing page showing a list of classes students can select from pops up on the screen. For now, the available classes range from SS1 to 3. The landing page also shows tiles of relevant subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology which contain more rich content on the app.

Selecting any of these subjects leads to a subpage that displays different chapters and lessons relating to that subject. Each lesson is short, lasting for the duration of about 3 to 5 minutes. This is to ensure that students do not lose attention or get bored before a lesson has ended. The lessons are designed to be engaging and understandable as they are taught with the aid of pictures, graphics, and animations. Once a lesson has concluded, students are presented with a short quiz to test their knowledge on the topic they have been taught. There are a total of about 977 lessons on the uLesson app.
Freemium Package
uLesson operates a subscription service whereby a few lessons under the first sub-topic of each chapter are free while the rest of the content on the platform are to be paid for in order to access them. To gain access to all the content on the app, students can either pay a subscription fee of ₦15,500 for one term or the ₦29,500 subscription plan for one academic year (Three Terms).
In addition to comprehensive lessons, uLesson provides students with access to past questions of national board exams such as WAEC, JAMB, and NECO. The app also helps students gain insights into their performance by showing them use data and analytics that track their progress.
