Feasting Butterfly

Animal: multicellular organism that obtains energy by eating food. With over 2 million known species, and much more awaiting identification, animals are the most diverse form of life on earth. They range in size from 30m (100ft) long to microscopic organisms only 0.05 mm (0.002 in) long. They live in a vast range of habitats, from the harsh weather in the tropics to the cold temperate regions. Animals are the only living things that have evolved nervous systems and sense organs that monitor their surroundings. The study of animals is known as zoology. Here are some animal facts, I guess by the time you get to the last fact all you will say is wow!
  1. Butterflies taste with their feet.
  2. Camels have three eyelids to protect themselves from blowing sand and can survive in the desert without drinking for almost 3 months. Despite the hump, a camel’s spine is straight.
  3. Roosters can’t crow if they cant’t fully extend their necks.
  4. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
  5. A cat’s jaws cannot move sideways.
  6. Honeybees never sleep.
  7. Snails breathe through their feet and can sleep for 3 years at a stretch.
  8. If you keep a goldfish in the dark, it will eventually turn white.
  9. A hummingbird weighs less than a penny.
  10. The ant, when intoxicated, will always fall over to its right side. Ants stretch when they wake up in the morning!
  11. A lion’s roar can be heard from more than five miles away.
  12. A shrimp’s heart is in its head.
  13. The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male’s head off.
  14. The heart of a mouse beats 650 times per minute!
  15. The female pigeon cannot lay eggs if she is alone. In order for her ovaries to function, she must be able to see another pigeon.
  16. A giraffe can clean its ears with its 21-inch tongue!
  17. The placement of a donkey’s eyes in its heads enables it to see all four feet at all times
  18. Owls are one of the only birds who can see the color blue.
  19. Crocodile babies don’t have sex chromosomes; the temperature at which the egg develops determines gender.
  20. A completely blind chameleon will still take on the colors of its environment.
