If the records are correct, then I think we are in very big trouble. In the space of one month we have witnessed over 25 cases of rape, incest and sodomy. The case of the pastor who raped a girl who was just discharged from the hospital got me thinking about the cost of shame that we contrive in our clan. The pastor asked the mother to allow the girl come stay with him immediately she was discharged, only to rape her continuously for three days. This girl was sick for Christ’s sake! As if that was not enough, the news of the young man who raped his daughter repeatedly came like a whirling wind. He asked for mercy on account that he “only ” slept with her four times. This young girl is innocent, yet we still act as though nothing has happened. We have built a society where incivility festers uncontrollably and some men have taken their erections to forbidden areas to enthrone crime. I’m most offended at the legal system under which these suspects are tried. Justice is hardly achieved here because from the victims to the law enforcement agents and the courts, the story is the same. We don’t punish people for wrong doings. We keep dragging our feet, then we cover up the iniquities with tradition. It’s time to build a new society where justice and fairness will reign as the fulcrum of social habitation. Where faith in humanity will stand as the common ratio for the course of man’s happiness. Where peace will strive and the dignity of man will be restored. Where little girls and little boys will not be abused by the people who should direct them to the part of moral uprightness. If we create that society then we have succeeded in building a new humanity.   About the Writer: Evans Ufeli is a lawyer and the author of acclaimed novel, ‘Without Face’.
