Food is a necessity for survival as well as daily functioning and it is also something that, if not chosen carefully, can greatly affect our health. If you have struggled with bad eating habits in 2014, here are 7 ways you can make 2015 a better year.
  1. Eat more fruits and veggies: Try to eat at least one more vegetable or fruit at every meal. Put more veggies into sandwiches, salads, pizzas, soups and omelettes.
  1. Eat less fast food: Your intake of fast foods should be reduced. To avoid the temptation of stopping over at a fast food restaurant, you can keep fruits or nuts with you, but if the temptation is hard for you to resist you can opt for a lower-calorie meal like grilled chicken or low fat chilli and you can sip water or diet soda instead of sugary soda.
  1. Eat only when you are actually hungry: Try to avoid mindless eating. Don’t just eat because you’re bored. Don’t multitask, because it makes you overeat.
  1. Snack less at work: Don’t keep unhealthy snacks in your office, even if you do keep it away from your table. The distance keeps you thinking each time you have a bite. Take time for a real lunch break.
  1. Eat overeat at restaurants: Find a restaurant that serves smaller portion sizes. Don’t wait until you get so hungry before getting to the restaurant so you don’t overeat. You could even have a healthy snack before setting out to the restaurant or you could start with a salad at the restaurant. If the portion is much, you can cut in half and take one half home or you can split it with a friend.
  1. Eat less sugar: If you can cut the consumption of at least a can of regular cola a day, it means you’re losing more than 30grams of sugar or say 8 teaspoons from your diet. You can replace sugary drinks with water or unsweetened tea. You can also drink more of fresh fruit juice as it contains less sugar. You should also eat unsweetened cereals instead.
  1. Eat breakfast every day: Do not skip breakfast. You can take it along with you to work or school if you’re too much in a hurry to eat at home. Good breakfast meals may include oatmeal or pieces of fresh fruits. It is necessary that you eat something in the morning to keep you going.
