Many people view tourism as a rich man’s activity. But going on a tour isn’t always about being on a leisure break. A lot of people are already involved in different types of tourism within and outside Nigeria, but they don’t even know it.

Here are the reasons why many people embark on tours:

  1. Business or Professional Events – When people travel to new locations to attend Conferences, Live shows, Exhibitions, Trade Fairs, Workshops, etc., they indirectly embark on a city tour on their way to the venues. Sometimes in a bid to get a break from a business event, some people tend to check out the fun places in that town. So you might be on a business trip, but it’s still a reason to explore a new city.
  1. Travel Incentives – When some people become lucky winners of a tourism promo, get a free ticket to another country as a birthday gift or an all expense paid trip as a reward for hitting a target at work, that becomes their reason for going on tour. Incentives are very hard to turn down. Even if only one person got gifted with the opportunity to go on a trip, chances are there is a friend or spouse who will love to tag along and won’t mind paying their bill to join in the experience.
  1. Sporting events – There are those who travel to new destinations to watch or participate in sporting events either recreational or professional. The sports event is usually not a 24/7 affair, so there will be time to move around and get a layout on some of the sites and sounds of that location. Even though sports took you to the new environment, you get to experience what a tourist would when visiting that city for the first time.
  1. Religion/journey of spiritual awakening – Every year, the government subsidies the fares of travelers who leave the country for pilgrimage and every year some religious bodies organise programs for its members to assemble in one location or another within Nigeria. There are those who travel to Mecca for Hajj, Jerusalem for Easter, Shiloh camp meetings, or even those who go to the Oshun shrine in the sacred grove in Oshogbo, Osun state. In the course of this journey for spiritual renewal, visitors experience other locations, and all that those cities have to offer tourists.
  1. Medical Trips – Whenever there is a medical reason to migrate from one place to another, it becomes an opportunity for a tour. That’s because you move from point A to B and see lots of things in-between. Examples of medical tourists are those who travel to receive medical treatments, give medical assistance or just because a change of climate is essential to their well-being or health.
  1. Leisure – Of course we are familiar with this. People who just want to relax while exploring different places and experiencing new things. It’s usually the best reason to travel because there is no time constraint or pressure except that which you exert on yourself.
