The almond fruit is the kind you don’t want to give a second look. This, perhaps, is because they aren’t as pleasing to the eyes as your apples, or berries. They look nothing special but before you make your decision on them, did you know that almonds are an excellent plant source of calcium and protein? I’m pretty sure you didn’t.

Here are 5 facts you probably didn’t know about the almond fruit:

  1. It provides calcium, protein, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, B vitamins, natural fiber, antioxidants and cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated fat. Studies show they protect against diabetes, gallstones and cardiovascular disease.
  2. According to studies, the almond milk has 50% more calcium than dairy milk.
  3. Almonds are among the low-calorie nuts. According to a report given by Health.com, per one-ounce serving, almonds are tied with cashews and pistachios at 160 calories. They also have more calcium than any other nut, plus nearly 9 grams of monounsaturated, heart-healthy fats, 6 grams of protein and 3.5 grams of fiber per serving.
  4. Almonds are effective combatants against diseases. According to a 2006 research funded by the Almond Board of Calfornia, just one ounce of almonds contains about the same amount of polyphenols, antioxidants thought to help fight off heart disease and cancer.
  5. Almonds can either be eaten raw or dry-roasted.
