Steve Harris Steve Harris, motivational speaker and bestselling author of From College Dropout to Corporate Sellout, has just written a new book, From Friend to Fiancée. We caught up with him to ask him some questions. 1. What inspired you to become an author? I’d never really thought I had anything to put down, but when I realized I was a limited resource, and books and podcasts could go so much further than I could, I decided to try my hand at writing. Besides, God knew He wouldn’t be on earth manifested as Christ forever, so He wrote His Word, the Bible, which has sold billions of copies worldwide. 2. Halleluyah! You have a very busy schedule. Do you do the actual writing yourself, or pass your ideas to a ghostwriter? Lol! Yeah, I’m incredibly busy. That’s why we’re having this interview as I’m headed to a meeting in VI, and no, I’m not driving *laughs* I write myself, I guess that’s why my next book (Honey, Why Are We Poor?) has taken 3 years to write and I’m still in Chapter 7 *laughs* 3. Wow! We can’t wait to read THAT! Why did you choose to write about the particular subject you tackled in From Friend to Fiancée? Great question! I was coaching a friend of mine on Blackberry and she had a little relationship matter of liking a fella who didn’t yet see her in that light, and she asked what I could advise her on getting his attention from a guy’s point of view. So I started sharing a few thoughts (a bit unconventional, but I always keep it real), like learn the balance between being friendly and flirty! (too friendly, you’re his lil’ sister, too flirty, you’re a slut) etc. It pretty much blew her away. She tried them and a week later, called me and said they worked like a charm. And she just said, “You should write a book.” So in order to prove my theories, I put my thoughts on twitter #fromfriendtofiancee and it was such a huge hit! I got over 300 followers in an hour, it trended and the best part was every woman who read it or retweeted it absolutely agreed with me. That was fun! 4. How successful was your first book, From College Dropout to Corporate Sellout? What effect did its performance have on your decision to write more? From College Dropout to Corporate Sellout has been pretty successful and the responses I’ve gotten have been humbling. We’ve sold over 3000 copies and are presently out of stock, so we’re running another 1000 copies at the presses. I don’t think of its success in terms of money, which has been pretty good (if I do say so myself), but I prefer to think that over 3000 people have been blessed, inspired to live a life without excuses and just get it Done and Dusted!!! 5. Amazing! What advice do you have for others interested in publishing their own books? I’d say, be you! Everyone’s got a story, no one will tell it better than you! Work with excellence and put your heart in it. What an excellent spirit you have! Thank you very much for your time Harris. You’re such an inspiration. Now you’re going to make me blush! I learned excellence from Fela Durotoye and Pastor Paul Adefarasin.
