Just like many factors affect the growth of a tree, several factors determine the level and quality of growth you experience as an individual. These factors are what determine how well an individual turns out at the end of the day. In this post, I will be sharing with you four of the factors that make for effective personal growth.
The Right Motivation
Every action we engage in or take as individuals requires a certain amount of motivation for us to start and see it through. Taken from two words, – motive and action, motivation could be referred to as the reason for an action or the reason for which an action is taken. There are so many reasons one could have to take any action but it takes only the right reasons to take the right actions that will create the right results one needs.
So, ensure the motivation is right for you and you will get it right in your growth journey. Also, ensure that your motivation is strong enough because if your motivation is not strong enough you may quit easily.
The Right Information
Having the right information will play a great role in your growth journey as an individual. With the right information, you will become more aware of areas in which you are lacking and through the right information, you will become more aware of how to effectively work on these areas. So, to be effective in your personal growth, you must ensure you go for the right information at all times.
The right information is obtained from books, conferences, workshops and mentorship. Invest your resources in these areas and you will reap the dividends in no little proportions.
The Right Actions
It is commonly stated that “information is power”, but that is not fully correct because the information is only power when it is used rightly. So, knowing what to do to make money will not get you the money until you take the right actions needed to get money. Bring two individuals and try to compare their growth, either in their careers or businesses, you will notice some differences. The differences you will notice will largely be due to the information each one has and what actions he or she takes as a result of them.
The right direction
In a previous post, I defined Personal Growth as simply all efforts you involve yourself in towards improving your life in the direction of your perceived destination. So, your personal growth is only effective when it is in the right direction aimed at getting you the results you need. For instance, one who wishes to improve in his public speaking will be moving in the wrong direction by investing time on the sports field.
The Right Environment (People)
Just like the English Poet, John Donne, pointed out in one of his poems, ‘no man is an island’, you cannot grow in isolation. Your environment has a direct and indirect impact on your growth as an individual. The environment here refers to the people you have around you and having the right people around you will go a long way in helping you improve in the areas you wish to improve in and also helping you achieve the results you have set out for yourself.
Even the Holy Scriptures attests to the benefits of having the right people in your growth journey in Ecclesiastics 4:10,
“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labour. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.”
Closing Thoughts
Understanding the factors that affect your growth and development as an individual will help you invest your time and resources in doing just that which is required to get you the results you need. And in this post, I have shared with you the five factors – the right motivation, the right information, the right actions, the right direction and the right environment.
