So you’ve had this job for a while, and the zeal and fervour that newness brings has long waned. Does this mean that you should start searching for a new one? Not necessarily. Many companies appreciate and even reward loyalty, and if you are getting quality experience where you are, there’s no need to be in a hurry to leave. Instead, try renewing your old job. Here are four tips to infuse your old job with new life.
1. Set up a performance appraisal meeting with your boss
This singular step can go a long way to boost your motivation, which is absolutely essential if you want a revamped job. The New Year brings with it great opportunities and renewed vigour in an office environment, so take advantage of it and set up a meeting with your boss or supervisor to review your performance and discuss ways in which you can grow in your current position in 2013.
Although this may feel like an interview, it is actually good for you as it not only forces you to confront crucial questions, such as where you see yourself in five years time and so on, but also carries with it the energising effect of a job interview, resulting in an excited you!
2. Acquire Training
Once you’ve had that meeting and have come away with a renewed sense of direction for your work and career, it is time to add new feathers to your professional cap. Find out which courses you will benefit the most from in your current job, and which ones will prepare you to take on fresh responsibilities as you advance in your chosen path. When you gain new skills and expertise, you build your confidence and self-esteem, and also foster the kind of enthusiasm that usually comes with a new job or position.
3. Reinvent Yourself
There are other ways to become the person you’ve always dreamed of being than starting a new job. Altering your routine and changing your work habits can make a world of difference. If you’ve always wanted to get a new wardrobe, you don’t have to wait for a new job to do so. Go ahead and do it. A new lunch menu or venue, going for drinks after work if you didn’t do so before, and putting in extra hours at the office (arriving earlier or closing later) are also changes that can refresh your attitude to work.
4. Get to Know Your Colleagues Better
New colleagues are one of the plus sides of a new job, as they often add flavour to your social life, or even help take it to a whole new level altogether. However, there are bound to be some current work mates you do not know at all, and getting to know them has the potential to increase your enjoyment of your day to day duties. Showing genuine concern, accepting and extending invitations to events such as birthday parties and weddings, can help you do this.
Even if you work at a small, close-knit company, becoming closer to colleagues you already know can instantly introduce fresh energy to your working environment.
Boredom at work can have adverse effects on your morale, and also on the quality of your work, and these tips can help get rid of the monotony that often lies at the root of it. Break the routine for the better. If you try, yet nothing seems able to refuel your passion, you may actually be in a job that’s all wrong for you, and it may indeed be time to consider a new job, and maybe a different career path. The good news is, the confidence-boost acquired from the training and interview practice will also put you at an advantage, should you decide to do so.
