  The Nigerian senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, kicked off their 2021 FIBA Afrobasket championship campaign on a positive note after beating the Malian national team, 81-73 points, in their first group game on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. Captained by Stephen Domingo, the D’Tigers were impressive throughout the duration of the game.

After a first quarter that saw the D’Tigers come out with a 28-12 points lead, the coach Mike Brown led side held on to a 44-43 points win in the first half of the game. Nigeria would advance their lead to 71-53 points in the third quarter and was strong enough to hold off the Malians in the fourth quarter to finish the game on a brilliant note. Benjamin Emelogu was outstanding in the game, registering 18 points, four assists, and eight rebounds, posting a 60.0 percent accuracy from the three-point line where he scored all 18 points in 10 attempts.

Team captain, Domingo, who was with the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA Summer League, had an outstanding game too, scoring 16 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Reacting to the result, coach Brown hailed his boys for emerging victorious against a physical African side. The tournament which kicked off on August 24, is holding in Kigali, Rwanda, comprises 16 African teams, and is expected to end on September 5, 2021.
