A total of 10,000 women from Lagos and neighboring states have registered for the 2018 edition of the Lagos Women Run (LWR), a 10 kilometer marathon race for Nigerian women of all classes. The LWR is an exclusive marathon race, designed for the social freedom of women across Nigeria. The event is expected to sensitize the general public on the issues Nigerian women face daily, such as sexual abuse, discrimination, and the education of the girl. This year, the run which will hold on November 10th, will begin at 7am, from a start point at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, and finish at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere. In a report by the Coordinator of the Run, Tayo Popoola, signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, Dapo Sotuminu, this year, the majority of registrations for the race, are from the Lagos Island, Lekki and the Ajah axis of Lagos State, which is a huge development, compared to last year’s event where most of the runners were from Ikorodu.
The good thing about this year’s registration is that we have one week to go and more women are indicating interest to compete in both the Open and Veteran categories. To avoid an upsurge since it’s just 10 kilometres marathon race, we have decided to close registration by 31st October, to enable us effectively manage the number we have.” — Popoola
On the 7th of November, there will be an ‘Expo’ to educate the runners on the importance of healthy living and the role of the marathon race to the Nigerian woman. Women from ages 18 to 45, will compete in the open category, while, the Veteran category, is open to women from ages 46 to 70 years. The winner of the Open category will take home ₦500,000, while the Veteran champion takes home ₦300,000. There will also be consolation prizes for second to tenth positions in both categories.
