The feeling is not pretty, you get endless ‘Whys’ you need to provide answers to. It also comes with a sense of guilt which can hold you back from making a decision when not careful. You feel like a fraud sometimes in the sense that you let your employer down. No matter how long you decide to stay, you will have to leave one day so, suck it all up. Many reasonable and not so good reasons may inspire you to leave your job, and they include:
- You want to experience more: If you are seeking opportunities to progress, take on more responsibility for your professional growth, and your job currently will not give that kind of experience, it is probably time to pivot to something else that gives you more fulfilment.
- You want more flexibility: Spending time and money on long commutes to work and back home is not necessarily a bad thing, but if the whole process burns you out and you crave more freedom and flexibility, you can take on more skills and opportunities that allow you to work remotely and gives the flexibility you want.
- You decided to pursue other goals: If the organization’s goals and values do not align with you anymore, it is probably a sign to move on to something that works within your reality.
- You found a better offer: People tend to shy away from money a lot. It is not a bad thing to leave your job for a better offer. As long as it is a better opportunity, go for it and advance your career.

- Your mental health is at stake: Your job could affect your mental health for a number of reasons. If you can identify triggers like stress, anxiety, a work-life imbalance that point back to your job, it is probably time to step back a little.
- You’re moving into a new industry: Transitioning between careers is a great thing. If your current career does not serve you anymore and you have a plan to move into a new field, quitting your job is not a bad idea.
- Family circumstances: Life only makes sense because of the meaningful relationships we build. Family issues could be, having a sick relative, relocation, growing family business, etc. All of these situations can require that you leave your job.
- You do not enjoy your work: A bad working environment might not make you enjoy your job. When you don’t like your job, you can not give it your best.
- Acquisition or merger in the organization: When the organization’s leadership changes, changes are made in employee structure which might affect you too, badly. If these changes do not align with your career projections for the present and future, you can quit.
- Unrealistic expectations: Placing pressure on your work process is wrong and should not be entertained. You end up trying all you can; just to please your employer. This is why it is best to understand your deliverables even before you start.
