The first captain of the Nigerian women national rugby team, Princess Alban Ugonwaezeh-Agugo, deserves huge credits for the enormous role she has played in making Nigeria a country where rugby talents do not have to quit their dreams because of how unpopular the sport is among Nigerians. Princess Alban, 34, started out on the athletic front as a tennis player and in 2007, earned sponsorship for a training tour at the HPC Sports Academy in Pretoria South Africa. Upon her return, she competed at the Delta State Sports Festival, outshining her opponents to emerge champion in the women’s tennis single. Her exploits on the tennis court saw her represent her school, Nwafor Orizu College of Education at the 2009 Nigeria College of Education Games (NICEGA) in Kano State and the 2012 edition in Omork Rivers State, winning ‘back to back’ Double Gold and Silver medals in the process. Following numerous successes in tennis on the national front, Princess Alban retired and shifted attention to rugby. The Nigerian rugby scene would recognize her legendary presence after she led the Delta State women’s rugby team to victory at the 2009 National Sports Festival in Kaduna State as they grabbed gold and silver medals at the event.

At the continental front, African rugby would recognize her presence when she captained the Nigerian women’s rugby national team to the 2009 African Women Rugby 7s (North) tournament in Accra, Ghana. Nigeria shocked the continent by narrowly losing to an experienced Tunisian side in the final game of the tournament to finish second. In 2021, the mother of two was appointed into the Rugby Africa Women’s Player Welfare and Participation Sub Committee. Off the field, Princess Alban commands a brilliant academic record. Aside from being an NCE holder from the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, she is a B.ed degree holder from the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Also, she holds an M.sc from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Princess Alban Ugonwaezeh-Agugo owns a school in Anambra State, the Prince Et Princess Schools, a platform she has used to award scholarships to less privileged kids, especially orphans.
