Super Eagles technical head, coach Gernot Rohr, has said his team must be very canny as they prepare to face Libya on Saturday for the first leg of their 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
Nigeria will take on Libya at the Goodwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, after which the Mediterranean Knights will host them in Sfax, Tunisia, for the return leg.
The Super Eagles have won only one game in the qualifiers so far – against Seychelles – and are currently in third place with three points on the Group E table.
Libya, however, top Group E with four points — same as second-placed South Africa, who will face Seychelles home and away.
From our big home-loss to South Africa last year, it is safe to assume that Seychelles may not stand a chance against the ruthless Bafana-Bafana boys when they meet on Sunday.
Hence, the Super Eagles must make maximum points — both home and away against Libya – to keep our hopes of making it to the Cameroon 2019 Africa Cup of Nations championships alive.
Rohr admits that Libya will be a tough nut to crack; however, his side will prepare for the clash like they did against Cameroon last year, for their Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier game. Nigeria defeated Cameroon in the first leg of their match-up 4-0 in Uyo, before playing 1-1 in Yaounde.
“We have to prepare for the two matches like we did against Cameroon last year. The focus is on Libya’s strong team, who had a draw in South Africa, and are leaders in our group. Two games in four days means that we have to be very fit physically and technically.”
