In a CPR scenario, the priority is ensuring the scene is safe from hazards and the rescuer has appropriate protective equipment like gloves and a CPR shield. The patient is checked for responsiveness and breathing. It’s important to understand that agonal respirations, which are ineffective gasping breaths, should be treated as a sign of non-breathing. If the patient doesn’t show any signs of normal breathing, consciousness, or pulse after checking the carotid, it’s time to initiate chest compressions.
