In a CPR scenario, the priority is ensuring the scene is safe from hazards and the rescuer has appropriate protective equipment like gloves and a CPR shield. The patient is checked for responsiveness and breathing. It’s important to understand that agonal respirations, which are ineffective gasping breaths, should be treated as a sign of non-breathing. If the patient doesn’t show any signs of normal breathing, consciousness, or pulse after checking the carotid, it’s time to initiate chest compressions.

CPR involves sets of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths. This cycle continues until advanced help arrives. Bystanders can be enlisted to assist, especially as performing CPR can be physically demanding. Watch the full video here:
