US-based Nigerian, Dagogo–Jack Named Physician of the Year

Prof. Samuel Dagogo–Jack has been named as the Internal Medicine Section Physician of the year, by the U.S-based National Medical Association (NMA). Samuel Dagogo-Jack, MD is the A. C. Mullins Professor in Translational Research, Professor of Medicine, and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN. He also serves as Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program and Director, General Clinical Research Center at UTHSC. Dr. Dagogo-Jack graduated from the University of Ibadan Medical School, Nigeria and completed residency training in internal medicine at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, University of Newcastle, UK, and was certified Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK). He underwent research training at the University of Newcastle, earning the Master of Science and the Doctorate in Medicine degrees for his work on epidermal growth factor. Dr. Dagogo-Jack completed postdoctoral fellowship training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, Missouri, where he also served on the faculty for several years. He is ABIM board-certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Dagogo-Jack is the Principal Investigator for the NIH Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) study at the University of Tennessee, and was Principal Investigator for the Washington University site of the NIH Diabetes Prevention Program from 1997-2000. His current research interests include the pathobiology of pre-diabetes, diabetes prevention, and the regulation of leptin in humans. Dr. Dagogo-Jack has served on or chaired Grant Review Study Sections for the NIH, the ADA and other organizations, and has been named to several national Working Groups in the field of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. He is an Associate Editor for the both Diabetes Care and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and has served on the editorial boards of the Endocrine today, Current Drug Targets, Cardiology Quarterly, among others. Dr. Dagogo-Jack’s publications include 16 book chapters and more than 200 scientific papers and abstracts. Dr. Dagogo-Jack has been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. He is a past President of the American Diabetes Association (St Louis Chapter, 1998-2000), and past chair, Endocrinology Section, Central Society for Clinical Research (1999-2001). Dr. Dagogo-Jack is an active member of the Endocrine Society and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Dr. Dagogo-Jack is the recipient of the 2008 Distinction in Clinical Endocrinology Award from the American College of Endocrinology and the 2009 Meritorious Achievement Award from the National Medical Association.
