The Nigerian national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress moved a step closer towards qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan after beating fellow African side, Mozambique, 85-51, in their first FIBA Women’s Olympics qualifier game. The back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket champions have now made their intention known in a group which equally comprise the Serbian (host nation) and United States teams, with a first Olympic appearance since 2004 now in sight for the Nigerian women. A back and forth first quarter saw little to separate between both teams before the African champions put the clamps on the Mozambicans, conceding two points in the space of six minutes.

By the end of the first half, the Nigerians had established a double-digit cushion, and from there, the score line moved in Nigeria’s favour. Nigeria’s Promise Amukamara was undoubtedly the game hero as she came off the bench to hit her team’s only triple of the first half as she contributed a total of 14 points, and rounded out her display with 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists.
