Nigerian energy company, Techno Oil plans to build a new liquefied petroleum gas terminal in Lagos. The facility, which will be constructed with help from Cakasa Nigeria Company Ltd and financed by Access Bank, will be the biggest of its kind in Nigeria, officials of both companies have said. Upon completion, the LPG terminal should have a storage capacity of 12,000 metric tons, potentially contributing to an increase in consumption of LPG in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony marking the signing of the agreement between the firms, Techno Oil’s Managing Director, Collins Onyeama, said he believed that the facility would play a significant role in turning the public’s attention to LPG as a clean and healthy alternative to traditional fuels like kerosene and firewood.

Nigeria’s annual consumption of LPG currently hovers around the 400,000-tonne mark. In per capita terms, it ranks as one of Africa’s lowest consumers of the fuel. The Techno Oil MD admitted that a number of obstacles lay in the way of a wider adoption of LPG by Nigerians; two of these factors, he said, were the public’s lack of awareness of the benefits of LPG use, and the high price consumers had to pay for imported cylinders. Onyeama, however, said that Techno’s current efforts were directed at solving these problems.

The LPG terminal is expected to be completed in November 2017.
