Snoring could be a bye product of ageing in some cases. According to the national sleep foundation, snoring affects 90 million adults, 37 million of them, on a regular basis. Snoring has been identified with obstructive sleep apnea (a sleep disorder), although, not all snorers have obstructive sleep apnea. Associated symptoms like restless sleep, chest pain, sore throat, difficulty in concentration will require the snorer to visit the doctor. Below are simple causes of snoring:

Obesity And Over Weight

The difference between obesity and overweight is that overweight means that an individuals body max index is higher than 25-29 (in adult). In the case of an obese person such an individual has a higher percentage of fat. Both conditions can cause snoring due to lung soft palate or large tonsils which can narrow the airway. Thin people due to other factors can also snore.

Habitual Drinking Of Alcohol

Alcohol is a depressant, it relaxes the muscles in the epiglottis (throat muscles) and can constrict the air passage in the oesophagus. Observation has reviewed that people who do not normally snore will snore after alcohol intake. If you already snore, alcohol can make it louder although certain medication can also cause snoring but could be temporary. Reduce or avoid alcohol consumption especially at night.

Sleep Deprivation

Snoring can cause obstructive sleep apnea, not getting sufficient sleep can also lead to further throat relaxation that will result in snoring. Having sufficient sleep will prevent snoring because fatigue has been identified as a possible causative factor of snoring.

Sleeping Position

Sleeping on your back aids snoring. It is advisable to always sleep sideways.

Hereditary

Family history of obstructive sleep apnea can cause snoring. The tendency of snoring can be associated with a family trait, especially if obesity, insomnia or overweight is traced to family history. Manage body weight with exercise and diet, use honey and ginger twice a day, and apply other aforementioned techniques. If desired result is not achieved, see your doctor. Surgery could be the final alternative. Change of lifestyle will help to stop snoring. Weight reduction exercise programme, low carbs, fruits and vegetable diet, weight loss, avoiding habitual alcohol intake can help to manage obesity and overweight. Featured Image Source: WRAL
