For clarity sake, taking work home is not the same as working remotely. Working remotely entails the practice of employees doing their job from a location different from the central office established by the employer. Inasmuch as this idea is very appealing, engaging in it for the wrong reasons would only leave you feeling disappointed, if not outrightly frustrated. It’s alright if you decide to work remotely, but have you stopped to ask yourself why? What gets your blood pumping in the direction of remote work? The answer to this question would determine the level of satisfaction you would gain from working remotely, because, inasmuch as people have valid reasons for it, some others are merely misguided. Below are some right reasons why people choose to work remotely:
No limitation by Geographical Location
This is one of the very sound reasons why you can choose to work remotely. In situations where you are not located in a viable area that would give you access to your desired job opportunities, you can kill two birds with one stone, by staying in your comfort zone with family and tapping into opportunities you want. With this, you are provided with the freedom of working from anywhere; such as at home, a coffee shop, a library, etc. giving you control of where you work.Desire For Productivity
The distractive nature of some work environments makes it difficult for employees to increase productivity. With the traditional work environment, your schedule is rarely your own, as your colleagues and even your boss tend to interrupt and interfere with your targets here and there. Most people desire to work remotely so they can structure their environment in a way that would enable them to maximize their work hours. This is another sound reason for exploring a remote work experience.Sign up to the Connect Nigeria daily newsletter
Work Balance
This is legitimately a right reason to work from home. Many people desire to work remotely, so there would be no room for lengthy commuting, distractions, schedule interferences, and missing out on family responsibilities. Here are some wrong reasons people have for wanting to work remotely:Desire To Avoid Human Contact
Most people turn on their Google searches looking for remote jobs, because they don’t want to interact, communicate or associate with other people. They have this desire of wanting to work on their own, without having to deal with excesses from colleagues or even clients. Well, this is a huge misconception. Just like a distance relationship requires strong and effective communication to survive, a remote worker requires effective communication to be able to achieve work targets and stay ahead of information circulation. A remote worker needs to communicate through emails, phone calls, video chats, etc. so there is no avoiding human interaction.Freedom To Work As You Please
Inasmuch as remote workers have the freedom to work when and where they want, they do not have the freedom to work as they please. What does this mean? Most people have the misconception that working remotely means having less workload and doing less. If that’s your mentality, then you might need to think again. A remote worker has the same workload as an office worker, but with the choice to determine where to work from. Working remotely is not an excuse to put off responsibilities or to flag deadlines/targets.Desire To Avoid Rules And Regulations
Although working remotely makes for flexibility, it requires a high level of discipline, commitment, dedication, and more self-motivation than you can dare to imagine. An office environment spurs energy to keep moving, but when there is no one around to keep you focused, or a hovering boss to keep you guided, you would need a great deal of discipline to achieve your targets. Desiring to work remotely to abstain from rules and regulations is a mere illusion. Featured Image Source: FlexJobsGot a suggestion? Contact us: editor@connectnigeria.com
