When the righteous are in power, the people rejoice. This is according to the Book of Proverbs 29:2, and this is what should influence the decisions of Nigerians in the forthcoming elections in 2023. As Africa’s most populous nation is set to go to the polls, many contestants have been embroiled in one ugly controversy or the other. Some of the contestants, bar Peter Obi, have been linked to financial corruption, drug trafficking cases, and inflammatory and divisive statements.

There has been no week that passed that one of the flag bearers hasn’t been roped in one scandalous past or the other. On Thursday, the Chicago State Government released official documents containing court proceedings that indicted the flag bearer of the APC as a drug trafficker. This figure has also been accused of corruption as a former governor who after leaving office continues to control the treasury of the state and determines who becomes the governor. What is more disturbing is the choice of his running mate who also is embedded with a backlog of scandals ranging from being responsible for the infamous kidnap of over 260 girls in Chibok to being one of the sponsors of one of the deadliest terrorist groups in the world, Boko Haram. Another major contender, a former vice president and a serial presidential candidate has been described by his former boss as the most notorious thief who stole an amount of money that could have been used to solve the power crises of the country. Furthermore, he has been indicted by a US court for money laundering and other corruption charges, which has been today known as the Halliburton Scandal.

Meanwhile, this individual parades himself as an industrious businessman who can revamp the nation’s economy. Nevertheless, it is in the public domain that this individual built his fortune on the misappropriation of public funds into private accounts. As for Mr Peter Obi, he has neither been indicted for misappropriation of public funds as former governor of the Anambra State nor accused of owing workers’ salaries or pensioners’ allowances or leaving an empty treasury upon departure. In fact, according to the testimonies of those who worked with him during his tenure, Mr Peter Obi refused to receive lands allocated to him nor accept allowances allocated for former governors, which ran into millions. The sterling achievements of Peter Obi are in the public domain for all to see. One of the recent deceptive wiles adopted by various detractors against the person of Mr Peter Obi is that all politicians in Nigeria are the same. Hence, there was no need to tout him as the Messiah. This assertion by these paid and unpaid detractors is a deliberate ploy to undermine the sterling achievements of Mr Peter Obi whose tenure was said to be one of the best in the past decade in Nigeria.

In fact, to the astonishment of millions of Nigerians, Mr Peter Obi upon leaving office left the sum of 70 billion Naira in the account of Anambra State, an act that has never been witnessed before in the history of Nigerian politics. This goes to show that in the face of universal corruption, there has been one man who has not defiled himself. He’s Peter Obi. Like Daniel who was a governor during the reigns of Kings Nebuchadnezzar and Darius of Babylon and Persia respectively, did not join other governors to do evil, Peter Obi distinguished himself in all righteousness.  In conclusion, while others have built their fortunes on the foundations of monies stolen from their previous positions as one-time political office holders, Mr Peter Obi is a self-made billionaire who left huge structural and infrastructural investments in Anambra State. This provides us more reason to hand over this country to a competent and decent CEO who can drive the nation to its place of prosperity. We can plant a bitter lemon seed and expect to harvest sweet oranges. We can’t vote for evil and expect good. Featured Image Source: The Guardian NG
