Football fans in Lagos will get the chance to see the game’s greatest player live, as he is expected to be in Nigeria on Wednesday the 20th of September on a three-day visit. Edson Arantes do Nascimento- or Pele, as he is popularly known –will, along with several other football legends from the African continent, be sharing the tips and rules of the beautiful game with young football enthusiasts.
The gathering of the old stars is being facilitated by the Winihin Jemide Series (WJS), through its Youth Experience Days Africa (YEDA) initiative.
The program lineup, as explained by the event coordinator Chidimma Okebalama, will include a celebrity match and a dinner with Pele and other football stars from the past. Speaking at the unveiling of the program last week, Okebalama said that the program was expected to attract young football fans, parents, representatives of the Lagos State Government, football administrators and corporate bodies. There will be an auction at the dinner, slated for September 24, in which football lovers stand the chance to get Pele memorabilia for themselves. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Kanu Heart Foundation and the City of David Football Academy. Teenagers from the clinic will also participate in a legend football tournament featuring such old time favorites as Peter Rufai, Kanu Nwankwo, and Victor Ikpegba.
According to the organizers, tickets for the football clinic will be sold for ₦5,000. The venue for the celebrity football match is the Campos Mini stadium in Onikan, Lagos, while the dinner is expected to take place at the Sky Lounge of the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
