Former Super Eagles international and West Brom striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, has announced his retirement from football at the UEFA Equal Game conference at Wembley on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old forward has been capped for Nigeria 63 times, scored at the 2014 World Cup, and also has 36 goals to his name in 129 Premier League appearances between 2010 and 2016.
Track record
Odemwingie grew up in Uzbekistan and Russia, and began his professional career with Bendel Insurance in the Nigeria Premier League.
He was snatched by Begian side, La Louviere, where he played three seasons before moving to French side Lile in 2004.
Odemwingie’s brilliant form prompted Lokomotiv Moscow to buy the player for £10m in 2007.
In 2010, Odemwingie moved to West Bromwich Albion, before making another move to Cardiff City in 2013.
After one season, the Nigerian moved to Stoke City, where he made 27 appearances and scored 5 goals.
In 2016, he was on the books for Rotherham United for a season.
Odemwingie’s last professional appearances came for Indonesian side, Madura United, in 2017.
Speaking on his retirement, Odemwingie said the next phase of his life is “slowly building up to a coaching career”, and he one day hopes to coach in the English Premier League.
“It’s an emotional day, so many memories go through your head. I didn’t know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it.
“Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football.”
