To mark the tenth year remembrance of the passing of her mother, star Nigerian actress, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde showed immense love to some widows in Nigeria. The event was she tagged-“A 20 Dynamic Widow Makeover”. The essence of this gesture by Omotola was to reach out and assistwidows in Nigeria that have had to fend for their family despite the absence of spousal support. Omotola by her action shows empathy, having lost her mother ten years ago and by so doing confirms that, rather than the experience our interpretation of what happens to us is truly what influences our actions. It’s not what you possess or what happens to you in life that matters, but rather what you do with it. Maya Angelou once said: “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throwsomething back.” Omotola is a living example of this principle. She is well known for her philanthropy and charitable works among the youths through the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme (OYEP). In addition, she is an ambassador to both the United Nations World Food Programme and Amnesty International where she constantly works with children and campaigns to end maternal mortality among women. The “20 Dynamic Widows Makeover” had a primary aim of giving the widows an experience that would otherwise not have been an option in order to raise their confidence and self-esteem. As such, the widows were treated to first class treatment, beauty regimen which included a total makeover starting with facials and massage by the reputable Fresh Look Spa and H and H Spa.  Hairstyling was done by celebrity hairstylist, Ugo of Make Me Beautiful and make up by the House of Tara. In addition they were allowed to indulge on a shopping spree for dresses that caught their fancy at Every Woman. A photo session, framed copies of which would be sent to all, with celebrity and international photographer, Kelechi Amadi Obi crowned the whole experience for the ladies. Pine Park in Lekki, Lagos was venue to the final event and it provided a memorable experience. Mossy ‘ella Bakers and Chivita provided abundant cupcakes and drinks respectively for the participants. The widows where also blessed with different home gifts such as sets of designer pots, cooking utensils and a bag of rice each, make up kit from House of Tara. Pastor Tessy of Jesus My Shepherd Church was also at hand to share a word of encouragement. In her speech at the event, Omotola said “This is something I wish, I or someone had done for my mother.  If you give these women money, they would spend it on their kids. This time it’s about them.  When my mother was alive, I didn’t know I was going to lose her so soon, she was a very beautiful woman, but because of all her struggles, she neglected her personal needs, she didn’t get to enjoy all these things like going to the spa, going shopping. So, this is one thing I would have loved to do for my mum who was a widow for 10 years. It was lovely and fulfilling to see the entire transformation and I am really grateful to all that helped to make this happen” Maya Angelou words rings true through her acts, “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver”.
