Nigeria’s sprint champion, Blessing Okagbare, has set her eyes on the star prize money in the IAAF Diamond League which is scheduled for Thursday 3rd, May 2018 in Doha, Qatar.

Gradual success

Okagbare will be making her third 100m appearance and her sixth overall appearance at the Doha Diamond League. The Nigerian has progressed since her first appearance at the 100m event in 2012, where she was fourth in 11.01 seconds. In her second meeting she moved up to finish second in 11.18 seconds in the race that Jamaica’s Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce won. She made her very first trip to Doha in 2011 where placed fourth in 200m in 23.19s. In her second trip to the competition in 2013, she competed in the long jump and made a 7.14m jump, earning her second place. This year, Okagbare will be competing against reigning Olympics double sprints champion, Elaine Thompson from Jamaica, Marie Jose, Ta Lou – double sprints silver medalist at the last IAAF World Championships in London – and Murielle Ahoure, who dethroned the Nigerian sprinter as African 100m record holder (10.78seconds).

Doha

Okagbare will be looking forward to winning the required eight points for the first position with the accompanying $10,000 prize money. The Nigerian did not compete in the women’s 100m or 200m event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, Australia, but led the Nigerian team to win the Bronze medal in the women’s 4x100m relay race. In Doha later this week, the Nigerian hopes to make an even better run than her impressive 22.04 seconds run in the 200m event in Abilene,Texas, USA.
