Nigerian international, Obafemi Martins, has returned to the Chinese Super League (CSL) side, Shanghai Shenhua, a club he departed in 2018 after a hamstring injury and has remained club less due to career-threatening injuries. Martins’ return to the CSL is largely owing to the fact that Odion Ighalo (the club’s main striker) has had his loan stint at Manchester United extended till January 31, 2021, with an option to join the English Premier League giants after the expiration of his loan deal.

It will be recalled that Ighalo replaced Martins in the Chinese side in 2018 but this time, the former Inter Milan striker is set to take the place of the former Watford FC striker in the Chinese club. Martins, 34, banged in 32 goals in 59 matches for the CSL outfit between 2016 and 2018 and played a huge role in the club’s Chinese FA Cup triumph in 2017. Popular amongst fans as Obagoal for his goal-scoring prowess, Martins on Wednesday, July 14, 2020, shared an Instagram video of himself wearing Shenhua’s kit with the rest of the club’s squad. The ex-Newcastle United of England striker was also quick to downplay critics who think it is right for him to call time on his professional career.

“After my career-threatening injury in China, many people advised me to quit but I told myself I still have a lot to offer the beautiful game. Football is my life; I eat, drink, and sleep football so I don’t see any reason to call time on something that makes me happy. I’m 34, but I feel like a teenager, and with this sensation, I can still play for any big team across the world. I’m thankful for what I have achieved in football but I thirst for more.” Obafemi Martins
With his return to the Shenhua Hongkou Football Stadium, Martins is expected to bolster Choi Kang-hee’s squad as they prepare for the resumption of the Chinese League. Source: This Day Live Featured Image Source: The Guardian NG
