Sportswear giant Nike, on Wednesday, unveiled the new Super Eagles Kit for the 2018 World Cup run scheduled to begin in June. Little wonder, after a proposed design for the Super Eagles, went viral last year, Nike was under pressure to outdo themselves on this one. In search of ideas and combination for the perfect design, the sportswear brand took the path to connect Nigeria with our past, as they drew inspiration from the jersey, the Super Eagles team of 1994 wore to their debut World Cup appearance. In a short while, just after the jersey was unveiled, a British newspaper, Daily Mirror, ranked it top among the 19 kits so far unveiled across the world for the Russia 2018 tournament. The Super Eagles Kit topped kits from other nations; England, Russia, France, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Egypt, Croatia, Brazil, Germany, Peru, Spain, Japan, Belgium. Speaking on the design and the choice to name the kit top-ranked, representative of Daily Mirror said, “And while you’re there, pick up this glorious effort from Nigeria that comes out as a deserving No. 1. It’s incredible, frankly, and is bound to turn us all into Super Eagles in the summer.” The jerseys were launched at a ceremony in London, England. Captain John Mikel Obi, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho, all modelled the new kits. In a youtube video, the players expressed their excitement over the new kit. Mikel said; “This is Nigerian. I can see the players going crazy over this one.” Iwobi and Iheanacho, who also modelled the jersey spoke on the design and the choice of colours. “This is different, you know,” Iwobi said. Iheanacho added “You know I love black, so this is perfect. I’m happy.” Ndidi was not left out as he added that “This is cultural, the fans are going to love this one”. The Super Eagles are expected to wear the jerseys for the five friendly games they will play, ahead of the World Cup. They are scheduled to play Poland, Serbia, Democratic Republic of Congo, England and the Czech Republic. Featured Image Credit: http://fcnaija.com
