The Super Eagles of Nigeria duo of Calvin Bassey and CyrielDessers ended the 2021/22 football season on a high after making the Europa League and Europa Conference League Team of the Season.

Calvin Bassey

Calvin Bassey, 22, and his Glasgow Rangers of Scotland side lost the Europa League title after suffering a 5-4 penalty defeat at the hands of the German side, Frankfurt as the game ended 1-1 in normal and extra time. The Nigerian defender featured 14 times for the Gers in the Europa League and was pivotal in their run to the final.

Cyriel Dessers

On his part, Cyriel Dessers finished the 2021/22 season as the highest goal scorer in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The Super Eagles forward moved to Feyenoord on loan from KRC Genk and progressed greatly by scoring in the domestic league and the continental competition.

Dessers, 27, scored 10 goals in 12 Conference League games as they lost 1-0 to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma in the final. Feyenoord is keen to sign him permanently. The striker is currently with the national team in the USA for a string of international friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador.

Dessers did not fail to bring his goal-scoring form at the club level to the national team as he scored in Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Mexico on Sunday, May 29, 2022, through an assist from Calvin Bassey.

Nigeria will be banking on their form alongside the rest of the squad when the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers commence. The Super Eagles will play against Sierra Leone on June 9, before filing out against Sao Tome and Principe on June 13, 2022.
