Nigerian-born designer, Duro Olowu, is on the team of artisans selected by Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the Unite States, to decorate the ground floor of White House for the upcoming Christmas celebrations. He is in charge of decorating the Vermeil Room – with two 8-foot Christmas trees draped with vintage fabrics, ribbons and encrusted tinsel – and the library. Born in 1966, Duro was raised in Lagos by a Jamaican mother and Yoruba father before his studies in a London boarding school. As a child, he aspired to become a fashion designer but this was “out of the question” in his family who would rather have him become a lawyer or doctor, The Guardian UK cites. Today, he is an award-winning designer who has made quite a name for himself for dressing the First Lady herself with colourful, summery prints. In 2014, he teamed up with popular US brand, JC Penney, to launch a line featuring his signature mix of prints on clothes, luggage and dish sets.
