Ruling Nigeria football body, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stated that it is yet to make a decision regarding the format for the conclusion of the 2019/2020 football season in Nigeria, especially the Nigeria Professional Football League season. News has been making the rounds recently that clubs in the NPFL voted for cancellation of the season using the points per game (PPG) format in order to reach a decision on the clubs that will represent Nigeria in CAF competitions in the 2020/2021 football season.

It also emerged that clubs decided that the cancellation will mean no relegation or promotion for clubs this season. However, Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi is not willing to accept the resolution as it threatens their quest for African football next season, leading to disagreement on the issue. The General Manager of Lobi Stars, Mike Idoko, described the points per game system as alien to Nigerian football, noting that it is unacceptable for the Benue-based side.
“In the first place, this PPG voting system they are talking about was unsuccessfully tested in French Ligue 1. A French court has already declared it illegal after Olympic Lyonnais and other affected clubs took the matter for judicial interpretation. So, why did the LMC and the Club Owners adopt it in Nigeria?” Mike Idoko
Reacting to this development, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mohammed Sanusi, urged all stakeholders to wait until the NFF is finished with consultations regarding the issue as they are working really hard to find a format widely acceptable for clubs.

“The Nigeria Football Federation has declared that wide consultation is still ongoing as to the format and pattern of foreclosing the 2019/2020 Football Season, including that of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL” Mohammed Sanusi
Of the 20 teams competing in the Nigerian elite division, 17 clubs voted for cancellation of the 2019/2020 league season, two abstained from the voting system (Lobi Stars and Akwa United), while Enugu Rangers voted for a second option which will permit playoffs. It will be recalled that the 2019/2020 season was suspended in March to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Sources: Complete Sports Guardian NG Featured Image Source: This Day Live
