Picking the right movie takes time but a new release is an exciting option to consider. Brand new and out in cinemas this weekend is The Set Up, a thriller from Inkblot Productions. Who’s in it? Adesua Etomi-Wellington. Honestly, just hearing that name is enough to make me carry my bag and start heading to the cinema. Adesua has impressed me over and over again since I first saw her acting in Shuga Naija Season 1. But back to The Set Up. What is it about?

Adesua Etomi plays the role of a young con artist and former drug smuggler who realizes she has bitten off more than she can chew when she decides to ‘help’ a socialite marry a wealthy heiress. Jim Iyke plays the part of the sly socialite, and Dakore Egbuson-Akande plays the wealthy heiress. Now, let’s talk about why you should watch it.

First, go watch the trailer. It doesn’t tell you too much about the plot, but it definitely makes you want to see more. (Here is also a review). The movie is directed by the fantastic Mr. Niyi Akinmolayan, so the visuals are amazing. Adesua Etomi’s character appears to be a trained fighter and also some kind of call girl. Which makes things even more interesting. Dakore Egbuson’s character is confident and captivating one minute, then insecure and restless the next. Is the rich girl as shallow as she seems? I want to find out.

There’s chase action, conspiracy, betrayal, family drama, friend drama, sleazy club scenes, and an amazing cast. Outstanding performers like Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, and Tina Mba are supported by some of the best new stars in Nollywood like Ayoola Ayolola, Marie Humbert, Damilare Kuku, Wendy Lawal and Uzor Arukwe. I don’t know about you but at this point I’m hooked.

Niyi Akinmolayan has a track record of films like The Arbitration, Chief Daddy, and The Wedding Party 2. Inkblot Productions gave us Merry Men and Up North and a part of the production of The Wedding Party 2. A collaboration between Inkblot and Akinmolayan is definitely a plus.

Anyway, I hope I have been able to convince you. The Set Up is out in all cinemas today. Will you go see it? Look out for me. I might just be standing behind you on the popcorn line. Have a great weekend.
