Data from Statistic Times estimate that the population of women globally stands at 3.905 billion, a figure that represents 49.58% of the world population. With this, there is a need to pay attention to women in a world that is largely patriarchal.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is observed annually on March 8 to celebrate, encourage, and promote the political, cultural, and socioeconomic achievements of women around the globe. It also serves as a platform for the women’s rights movement to bring to the fore, issues such as gender equality, violence and abuse against women. As the globe continues with efforts aimed at tackling the threat of climate change, the 2022 celebration of International Women’s Day is accompanied by the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. Owing to the fact that women constitute almost an equal half of the world’s poor population and are more dependent on natural resources which are most threatened by climate change, women are increasingly being identified as much more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change than men.

One of the major problems confronting the globe in the 21st century is advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster risk reduction. Despite this challenge, women and girls have proven to be powerful and effective leaders/change-makers in advancing movements aimed at climate adaptation and mitigation. Women’s involvement in sustainability initiatives around the globe is very much needed in campaigns aimed at climate change.
