In our world today, there are many activities which we engage in that not only take our time but completely consume us. We no longer just deal with these activities and retire, we actually live therein, mostly abstractly. Inattentively and absentmindedly, you can be at home and be elsewhere, lost in the realm of thoughts with a lost expression. The mind is already wallowing away on its own.
The human mind is such a perfect entity that it has the ability to take to the instruction of its owner or to wander off into the space of its engagements or addictions. The eastern schools were about the first to realise, teach and stress that the best way for any man to gain absolute control of the mind is through the boring and tiring process of meditation. The renowned prophet of Islam, Muhammad (SAW) used to meditate in a cave; the bible in Matthew 6:5-8, Psalm 1-2 and Timothy 4:15 teaches meditation; Buddha also taught and practiced meditation. These are proofs from our various religions that the therapy of meditation is too exceptional to be untold or unstressed.
Imagine a situation whereby you are constantly conscious of everything in your environment and your state of mind. When you can decide when to think of any activity you desire without your mind going off in a spontaneous and uncontrollable manner. It would be great to attain the capacity of such a faultless and impeccable mind. A mind that can deliver an admirable level of concentration. A mind that can maximise yield. A mindfulness!
This is the advantage meditation bestows.
Meditation is not just about folding your legs and arms and closing your eyes. It is more about what happens in that state. It is more about the battle between the mind and its owner. The owner tries to steady the mind on a particular thought or thoughtless state but it frequently spins out of control.
Meditation is used for several purposes now as science has come to realise its advantages in human health. These purposes include yoga, therapy etc. In therapy, professionals have come to regard moment-to-moment awareness cultivation in meditation as a curative mechanism effective in psychotherapy.
Do you want to try it out?
It really isn’t hard to meditate. Spend 10 minutes daily trying to think of nothing. Just concentrate on your breathing and see how it improves your life and daily activities gradually. Improve yourself, meditate!
